Alès hospital wants to continue its development and consolidate its emergency services during 2025

On the occasion of the wishes for 2025, Christian Cataldo, director of the Alès hospital, gave a broad overview of the situation of the hospital this Thursday, January 23.  

It was in a rather warm atmosphere that the wishes of the management of the Alès-Cévennes hospital center (Chac) took place this Thursday, January 23. Warm because it was preceded by a shower of medal awards, more than thirty, to thank so many staff of the Alès hospital for their 20, 30 or 35 years of service.

Afterwards, Christian Cataldo, director of the hospital since May 2024, drew up the traditional assessment of the past year. In an establishment“which I sometimes find, as I left it in certain sectors (he was deputy director of the Chac between 1997 and 2006), I have above all received strong support from its staff”. “Despite the uncertainties” budgetary on a national scale, “our institutions carry many projects”. Starting with a round of recruitment in departments where demand is high: child psychiatry, gastroenterology, geriatrics, oncology, visceral and orthopedic surgery. “We held up, but we also have a great team of pulmonologists” , with 5 practitioners present allowing new bed openings. Additional bed openings (4 per department) are also announced in gastroenterology, orthopedics and visceral surgery.

52,000 patients received in the emergency room

In 2024, the emergency department of Alès once again broke a record for attendance, with 52,000 patients taken in during the year. A department that, since the fall, has been subject to periods of regulation, following the simultaneous absence of three doctors. Currently, “17 positions are filled”, specifies Christian Cataldo, who ensures that the problem is taken seriously, with results expected soon: “We have four part-time positions arriving soon, plus the equivalent of 1.5 doctor positions starting in May thanks to an agreement with the Nîmes University Hospital.” The Alès director thus hopes to reach the equivalent of 20 positions “before the summer”, which would free the department from regulation problems.

A new regulation of emergencies this Friday, January 24

In connection with the regular shortage of doctors, the hospital center informs of a new night of regulation in these emergencies from 10 p.m. this Friday, January 24 and until 8:30 a.m. Saturday, January 25. During this night, patients are invited to contact 15 before going to the hospital. Vital emergencies remain assured 24 hours a day by the Smur. As a reminder, the regulation does not concern the care of pregnant women and gynecological emergencies.

At the same time, 2025 is shaping up to be a key year in the restructuring of emergencies. In October, the on-call medical centre, which must move from the department to make room for it, will be opened in the director's former accommodation, next to the hospital. This will free up 200 m2 to facilitate the care of patients day and night.
