Alexeï Navalny's widow postpones her visit to Canada

A transportation problem forces the cancellation of the meeting planned for Tuesday between the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, and Yulia Navalnaïa, the widow of former Russian political opponent Alexeï Navalny.

Ms. Navalnaïa was welcomed to Ottawa in her capacity as chair of the advisory board of the Anti-Corruption Foundation. His meeting with the Prime Minister was scheduled to take place at 3 p.m. in the Canadian capital, but had to be postponed due to “unforeseen travel delays.”

The office of the Federal Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mélanie Joly, did not modify the announcement of new sanctions against Russia on Tuesday. His government imposes additional sanctions on 13 people suspected of having a link with the death in custody of Russian opponent Alexeï Navalny.

These are senior officials working for the Russian prison service or police force “who were involved in the ill-treatment and death of Mr. Navalny,” says Ottawa.

This winter, activists against Russia's bellicose actions in Ukraine displayed the portrait of Alexeï Navalny and placed flowers in his memory in an Ottawa park, very close to the Russian embassy. His widow, Yulia Navalnaïa, promised to continue her work.
