In the not-so-distant future, your food orders may no longer be delivered by humans, but by robots. In the United States, a company called Serve Robotics, a former subsidiary of Uber, has developed autonomous delivery robots that are already operating in some neighborhoods in Los Angeles. In 2023, its partnership with Uber Eats has been expanded, with the goal of deploying more than 2,000 delivery robots in the United States. Like the self-driving car, these delivery robots are progressing slowly but surely. However, new milestones are reached every year.

Recently, for example, Serve Robotics unveiled its third-generation robot, which is a major breakthrough. In fact, this new robot has 5 times more computing power for artificial intelligence, a 67% increase in autonomy and a 60% increase in maximum speed. On the other hand, the Serve Gen3 Robot has a 50% lower cost, which is good for the company's business model.

In its press release, Serve Robotics indicates that this new robot is already in production, while the company is about to deploy the 2,000 robots for Uber Eats “in several US markets”. A deployment that would be completed in 2025. In other words, Serve has a more capable and cheaper robot model, and we should see its robots in more places across the United States.

Furthermore, in addition to strengthening its partnership with Uber Eats, Serve Robotics is also experimenting with the use of its delivery robots in combination with drones from Wing, the subsidiary of Alphabet (Google's parent company). As a reminder, Wing is a company specializing in delivery drones. During this pilot phase, Serve Robotics robots will be able to pick up meals ordered online from restaurants and deliver them to specialized platforms where drones will take over.
