This is the one of the biggest global events in the sector: starting this Monday, the not-so-small world of animation will be at the Annecy International Festival. Zoom in on the program and the films that will try to win the Cristal d'Or, one year later Flee.

In total, 500 films will be presented throughout this week. But only about ten are competing for the prestigious Golden Crystal, won last year by Flee by Jonas Poher Rasmussen.

This Monday, June 13, on the program for the opening of the 46th Annecy Animation Festival, the highly anticipated Minions 2: Once Upon a Time Gru, from the Illumination studio. Also worth noting among the films in competition: works inspired by true events, such as Charlotte, which traces the fate of Charlotte Salomon, a Jewish painter murdered by the Nazis at Auschwitz. And Nayola, a gripping dive into the history of Angola through the destiny of three women.

Four female directors are coming this year to defend their films. Among them, Atsuko Ishizuka, who presents the initiatory story of three Japanese teenagers (Goodbye). And Amandine Fredon, who co-directed “Le Petit Nicolas” with Benjamin Massoubre, evoking their love and respect for the work of Sempé and Goscinny.

Out of competition, festival-goers will have the opportunity to debate one of the topics that is stirring up the world of cinema and culture in general: the struggle between streaming platforms and movie theaters. There is no doubt that Disney's recent decision to broadcast Strange World directly on its Disney+ platform, without going through the French cinema box, should get people talking in the aisles of Annecy.
