Artificial intelligence is capable of the best as the worst. The Cupertino firm has finally taken part in the AI race by unveiling Apple Intelligence. Unfortunately, the French will have to be patient because for the moment, Apple has not managed to find a satisfactory agreement to launch Apple Intelligence in Europe.
While the beta version of iOS 18.1 is here, some American users have already been able to play with Apple Intelligence. Unfortunately for one of them, the AI of Tim Cook's teams can be indelicate. That's the least we can say. Indeed, it was Apple Intelligence that told him about his breakup and not in the best way…
Among the features promised by Apple with Apple Intelligence, there is the summary of messages received. On paper, this seems very relevant and useful. Unfortunately, this can quickly create disconcerting situations, worthy of a dystopia.
“Not in a relationship anymore; wants her stuff from the apartment”. This is how Nick Spreen found out that his girlfriend was leaving him via text on his iPhone 15 Pro. Tough, tough… Apple Intelligence must have wanted to do a good job by summarizing the latest messages sent by his (ex) partner. But the result is disturbing. The developer published the screenshot of the notification on X (ex-Twitter), for those who want to see what a summary of breakup messages by Apple Intelligence looks like. He added that it was (unfortunately) very real and he specified that it was his birthday. The worst part, it seems, is that he confirms that the summary by Apple Intelligence is indeed faithful to the messages sent by his ex-girlfriend.

The couple had gotten into an argument at a bar and he left in the middle of it. His ex sent him multiple messages telling him it was over between them.
“I feel like it gives a level of distance that’s not a bad thing. Kind of like a personal assistant that stays professional and supports you even in the most horrible situations, but yeah, more than anything, it felt surreal and dystopian,” he told Ars Technica.
With this story, there is enough to make your teeth grind. It is certain that with the rise of artificial intelligence, they will multiply in the years to come. In the future, the announcement of bad news by AI could well become commonplace. It is far from making anyone dream. Breakups by text are already far from respectful, but this feature is enough to make them even more difficult. Ah, the future
