Apple has always been interested in home products. In addition to the Apple TV, it has also developed the HomePod speakers. However, while the company has huge success in the smartphone, tablet, computer and smart home accessory markets, it is struggling to compete with the home automation ecosystems of Google and Amazon. However, Apple has not yet abandoned its ambitions in this area and for some time now, rumors have suggested that it is working on a successor to the HomePod that, like Amazon's Echo Show or Google's Nest Hub displays, would have a screen. In fact, it is even possible that Apple's smart screen could have a robotic component.

Apple robots in your home ?

In his latest newsletter, Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman mentions a project codenamed J595, which would consist of developing a sort of iPad held on a robotic support for the home. The idea would be to have a screen that follows the user as they move around the table. Such a product would be useful, for example, for someone who cooks and uses the screen to follow a recipe. According to the Bloomberg journalist, this connected screen could arrive in 2026 or 2027. But that's not all. Indeed, this source indicates that in the next decade, Apple could even offer mobile robots, or even humanoids.

According to Gurman, Apple has even imagined robots that could load a washing machine or clean dishes. Of course, these are still very long-term projects. And the journalist, who is usually very well informed, admits that these ideas “don’t go beyond sketches on a whiteboard.” In any case, these rumors suggest that after the failure of its self-driving car project, Apple is looking for new revolutionary ideas to ensure its long-term growth. And when it comes to robotics, Apple could be encouraged by recent advances in artificial intelligence. Moreover, according to Mark Gurman's newsletter, Apple is also working on a sort of improved version of Siri that would have a personality, and that could be used by its future robots or connected devices for the home.

A race rekindled by AI ?

In any case, if Apple launches into domestic robots, it could face some pretty tough competition. Among the companies working on humanoids, there is Tesla, which has already made huge progress in the development of its Optimus robot. Initially, this robot should work in factories, but Elon Musk believes that later, Optimus could also serve as a domestic robot and even babysit.

In July, we also discussed the progress of the startup Figure, whose humanoid robot is already used in a BMW factory. This startup can also count on hundreds of millions of dollars raised to develop its technology, and on a partnership with OpenAI. Otherwise, the company Boston Dynamics also recently showed off the motor skills of its humanoid.

  • Apple is reportedly interested in robotics and according to Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, he is considering developing a mobile robot for the home or even a humanoid
  • However, real Apple robots will not arrive until the next decade
  • In any case, if Apple enters this market, it will have to face competition from companies like Tesla or Boston Dynamics
