During a conference held at an unusual time, Apple unveiled the chips that will equip its brand new personal and professional computers. The M3, M3 Pro and M3 Max are the first chips engraved in 3 nm.

This miniaturization of the component makes it possible to improve the speed of the machines while saving energy . “With 3-nanometer technology, next-generation GPU architecture, a more efficient CPU, a faster Neural Engine, and more unified memory, the M3, M3 Pro and M3 Max chips are the most advanced to date for a personal computer” declares Johny Srouji, Senior Vice President of Hardware Technologies.

The M3, M3 Pro and M3 Max represent first “The most significant leap forward in graphics architecture for Apple chips” explains the brand. Concretely, Dynamic caching allows each task to be allocated the minimum amount of memory necessary to deliver better performance for each application and each game.

The M3, M3 Pro and M3 Max also feature ray tracing for the first time, a process for modeling light when it interacts with a scene, which has the effect of making images (especially in games) more realistic.

In addition, these M3, M3 Pro and M3 Max deliver ever more impressive graphics performance: Apple announces a speed multiplied by 2.5 compared to M1 chips, with a GPU 65% more powerful. At equivalent performance, the graphics chip consumes half as much energy.

The CPU is not left out. Up to 30% faster than M2 (50% compared to M1), the performance cores can consume up to half as much energy.

Finally, Apple is improving the Neural Engine, part of the chip used to manage AI and video. Up to 60% faster than M1 chips, it opens up new perspectives for creators (photographers, videographers, 3D designers), including quick and easy access to the latest AI features of certain software such as Adobe Premiere.

Who and what is all this computing power used for? Firstly to those wishing to benefit from the breathtaking performances. To date, the M3, M3 Pro and M3 Max chips face no competition, while waiting for the first machines incorporating the latest Elite chips announced by Qualcomm this week.

The M3, M3 Pro and M3 Max address also a professional audience, particularly those in creation, development or design. “The M3 Max chip is designed for professionals who need the highest performance in a MacBook Pro with the best battery life in the industry” explains Apple in its press release.

Finally, it's hard not to see an opening to the world of video games. If Macs have never really been machines for gamers, Apple has announced that it is working more with certain publishers to port AAA licenses to its machines. The summer hit Baldur's Gate 3 for example will land on the App Store very soon.

The M3, M3 Pro and M3 Max chips will first equip < strong>the latest MacBook Pro and iMac presented during the keynote.

The 3 things to remember

  • Apple has announced the M3, M3 Pro and M3 Max chips
  • They will first equip the latest MacBook Pro 14” and 16” and iMac 24”
  • They always deliver more power with a focus on GPU performance
