Apple will soon no longer sell these iPhones in France, get ready

Bad news for Apple customers at the end of 2024. Indeed, two iPhones that were recently released will soon no longer be sold in the European Union. Let's take stock of this information and its implications.

Which models will no longer be available ?

The Apple brand will therefore stop selling the third-generation iPhone SE in the 27 EU member states as well as the iPhone 14 range, which was only released in September 2022.

The reasons for this decision do not have to be looked for far. Indeed, Apple will only comply with the Digital Markets Act (DMA) which imposes charging via a USB-C cable on all smartphones from January 2025. However, the two models mentioned are the last from the Cupertino company to still be equipped with a Lightning port.

Why is the EU taking this decision ?

The EU's main objective is to reduce electronic waste. It will also become easier for consumers to switch from iOS to Android (or vice versa) and cables can be kept without ending up in nature. The Apple brand has just started to anticipate this rule and has permanently switched to USB-C cables from the iPhone 15 released at the end of 2023.

Soon a new alternative

Our colleagues at PhoneArena also rightly point out that consumers who wanted to opt for an iPhone SE will probably not have to wait long. Indeed, Apple should release a fourth-generation model as early as next year. According to rumors, it will take the basics of the iPhone 14 but will offer 8 GB of RAM and an A18 processor to run Apple Intelligence.

Vintage, obsolete, Apple vocabulary to know

Be careful not to confuse this measure with the usual practices of the Cupertino firm, which classifies its products as vintage after five years. Behind this term, sometimes considered positive, lies a bitter situation for consumers. Indeed, this means that the device is no longer available for sale and that the Apple brand no longer ensures the production of spare parts for these models.

Then, after seven years, the tech giant no longer offers any hardware assistance or spare parts, even in its authorized centers. More information in this old article published by our colleagues at iPhone here.
