CINEMA – After a resounding success in the United States, the film Sound of Freedom, directed by Alejandro Monteverde, is coming to French screens. It will be released in theaters on November 15, five days before International Children's Rights Day, celebrated on November 20. However, the most impatient can buy tickets for the public preview screening on November 7 at 8 p.m., at the UGC Normandie, avenue des Champs-Élysées. We have seen this film which has already caused a lot of ink to flow, not always in the direction desired by its authors.

As as co-writers of the film Sound of Freedom, it was difficult to see the partisan controversy distract us from the deep intention of our work: to use the power of cinema to raise awareness of the reality of child trafficking,” deplore Alejandro Monteverde (also the film's director) and Rod Barr in a column published on August 14, 2023 in The Hollywood Reporter.

“We were stunned to discover the controversy that surrounded the film's release in the United States last July, so great was the gap with the content of the film”, echoes the distributor, Saje Distribution.

A controversy that reached France, since even before the release of the film in France, the media mentioned the “conspiracy theories” that they said it relayed.

This is not the case. Sound of Freedomis above all a breathtaking action film, inspired by the life of Tim Ballard, a former special agent of the United States Department of Homeland Security, assigned to the unit responsible for the fight against child crime on the Internet. After undercover missions to combat child sex tourism, Tim Ballard resigned in 2013 to create Operation Underground Railroad, a foundation whose goal is to save children who are victims of networks that reduce them to sexual slavery.

With Sound of Freedom, the viewer follows the hero, played by Jim Caviezel, in his work as a federal agent and then in perilous rescue operations that will take him to South America.

A captivating thriller inspired by true events

The film is incredibly effective. It is watched as a captivating thriller, with rhythmic staging and moving acting. It is never boring. But we also know that the story is inspired by real events, so from being moving, the film becomes overwhelming. And the message conveyed by the director gets through. Hundreds of thousands of children are victims of sexual violence and trafficking in the world. There are more human beings reduced to slavery in the 21st century than there were when slavery was authorized. And as painful as this reality is, we must stop giving in to the temptation to look away from it. So that it stops. So that an international fight that is up to the challenge can finally be put in place.

“If there is one issue that can unite everyone, it is ending child trafficking. We have always been convinced of this. Child trafficking is not a question of right or left. It is a fundamental issue of human rights, which affects us deeply as human beings,” argues Alejandro Monteverde. This is the whole purpose of his film, which aims to “raise awareness of the reality of child trafficking” and which succeeds masterfully. To get the message across, spectators are invited to buy, if they can afford it, additional tickets that will be distributed free of charge to those who would like to go see the film, but for whom the price of a screening would represent too great a financial outlay. This “call for donations” of a particular kind has made it possible to distribute more than 9 million places across the Atlantic!

Homayra Sellier, the president and founder of the international NGO Innocence in Danger, which is sponsoring the release of the film in France, points out that Europe is also concerned by child trafficking. “We must not think that this crime only exists on the American border and in Latin American countries,”, she warns. Child sex trafficking is a reality that “we must accept exists everywhere in the world, including in France,” she insists.

Alejandro Monteverde will be talking about his film to readers of France-Soir the week before the theatrical release of Sound of freedom.

Online ticketing to attend the preview on November 7.
