Generative artificial intelligence (AI) has recently evolved, enabling significant progress in many areas. However, we do not always realize that through these requests, this AI generates its response from a set of large data, the storage of which requires a large amount of energy. This “habit” among many others, relies largely on non-renewable energy resources (coal, oil, etc.). And the manufacture and use of digital objects in our daily lives often have a significant ecological impact, too little perceived by their users.

Discovering the “hidden costs” of new tools

The CPIE of the Thau Basin develops and runs awareness and education programs around the theme of energy. In particular, he is working on the “Digital Sobriety: Changing Our Practices for Tomorrow” program, developed by the Occitanie Regional Union of CPIEs, and plans to train municipal agents and raise awareness among young people about these issues.

These times of discussion allow different audiences to discover the “hidden costs” of these new tools: their carbon footprint, the depletion of resources caused by digital technology, but also the impact on health. In 2024, the Poussan college had been made aware of this program. In 2025, the actions continue in Sète.
