As soon as he became president, Donald Trump withdrew from the Paris Accords (again)

It's not really a surprise, but Donald Trump has just withdrawn the United States from the Paris Climate Accords. Signed in 2015, during COP21, this global agreement had as its main objective to limit global warming to below 1.5°C compared to the pre-industrial era. With 2024 already having passed this threshold, the withdrawal of the United States finally nails the coffin of this treaty.

Why Donald Trump is withdrawing from the Paris Accords ?

During his first campaign for the American presidency in 2015, Donald Trump had already publicly criticized the Paris Accords, then ratified by Barack Obama. As soon as he gained access to the White House, the 45th president put an end to the American presence in this text.

It was not until 2020 and the election of Joe Biden that the United States returned to the Paris Accords. They therefore left them, 4 years later, with the return of Donald Trump to the head of the country. Concretely, this departure will allow the United States, which is already the second largest polluter on the planet, to emit even more greenhouse gases.

A decision seen as ” a historical nonsense “ by Greenpeace. The French branch of the association ” strongly condemns “ this withdrawal which it considers ” dangerous “. A concern that the new president does not seem to share, on the contrary, Donald Trump declared a few hours after his inauguration a ” energy emergency “.

This exceptional measure should make it possible to boost hydrocarbon production on American soil. A decision that has been heavily criticized by environmentalists, given that the United States is already the world's largest producer of hydrocarbons.

A COP30 in Brazil without the United States ?

With such a climate-sceptic policy, the United States will be expected to take a turn next year at COP30, which is to be held in Belém, Brazil. On this occasion, world leaders are to meet to discuss, in particular, the definitive end of oil.

After COP29, held in Baku, put a stop to coal production, it is other fossil fuels that are in the crosshairs of Western powers. It remains to be seen whether Donald Trump will take part in these new discussions or not. In any case, any agreement that goes against the economic interests of the United States risks remaining a dead letter on the Oval Office.

The WHO also in Donald Trump's sights

In addition to these positions on the environment, let us note that Donald Trump has just withdrawn the United States from the WHO, the World Health Organization. In his argument, President Trump claims that the WHO has “ripped off” Uncle Sam.

He notably compared American and Chinese financial contributions during a recent speech. Although he does not control the federal agencies holding the funds, he asks them to “suspend all transfers of funds, support or resources from the United States government to the WHO.”
