Stéphane Massé, 41, will spend at least 14 years behind bars for the murder of Linda Lalonde.

Radio-Canada

Almost four years after the events, the killer Stéphane Massé, 41, was sentenced Wednesday to life in prison without the possibility of parole for 14 years for the second-degree murder of his ex-spouse, Linda Lalonde, who was also murdered of around a hundred stab wounds in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield in November 2019.

During the reading of the sentence, at the Palais de Justice of Montreal, Judge Yvan Poulin spoke of a tragedy of incredible sadness, which should not have happened.

Aux In the eyes of the magistrate, the victim, aged 48, died in horrible, atrocious circumstances, at the hands of her own husband, in her own kitchen.

Judge Poulin specified that the Court had taken into account several aggravating factors before imposing the sentence, namely the brutality of the actions, the number of blows delivered , the vulnerability of Ms. Lalonde at the time of the tragedy, as well as the consequences for the victim's loved ones.

The assassin was, however, able to benefit from certain mitigating circumstances, in particular because he surrendered himself to the authorities, had no criminal record and collaborated with the investigators.

Stéphane Massé was found guilty of the murder by a jury last month.

A few weeks before the feminicide, Linda Lalonde had told him that she would leave him if he did not remedy his consumption problem.

In the opinion of the victim's son, David Lalonde-Langlois, the four years that the affair lasted were very long, very difficult.

We can really come full circle and know that justice has been done, even if we know that it will never be enough, that it will not bring back [Linda Lalonde], a- he added.
