Jimmy Gressier, already the French record holder for the 5,000 and 10,000 m outdoors, smashed the French indoor 5,000 m record on Saturday evening in Boston, USA, by crossing the line in 13 min 00 sec 54.

Gressier lowered the old French record for the distance by almost 11 seconds, held since 2010 by steeplechase Bob Tahri (13:11.13).

During the meeting organized by Boston University on Saturday evening, Gressier won ahead of his compatriot Romain Legendre (13:02.08) while another Frenchman, Fabien Palcau, took 7th place in 13 min 11 sec 03.

New York next week

All beat the old national indoor mark. Gressier, 13th in the Paris Olympics over 10,000 m this summer, decided this winter not to run cross country to concentrate on a few indoor meetings and road races.

He must line up next week in the 3,000 m at the Millrose Games in New York, with the French record for the distance once again in mind (7:33.73, by Bob Tahri in 2010).
