Aubrey Plaza, who rose to fame in the series Parks and Recreation and recently starred in The White Lotus, is facing a personal tragedy. This Friday, January 3, 2024, emergency services were called to her home by her husband Jeff Baena's assistant. When they arrived, they could only find the filmmaker, aged only 47, dead. An investigation is underway to determine the exact causes of his sudden death.

Noted beginnings behind the camera

Born in Miami, Jeff Baena developed a passion for cinema at an early age. After studying in New York, he began his career in Los Angeles as a screenwriter. His first feature film as a director, Life After Beth, released in 2014, earned him rave reviews. He then confirmed his talent with The Little Hours in 2017.

Interviewed about his profession, he confided at the time: “It's all I ever wanted to do. I've been a screenwriter for 12 years, but my goal has always been to direct. It was in my intentions from the beginning and it seemed natural to me.” Jeff Baena leaves behind a promising filmography with also Joshy (2016), Horse Girl (2020) and more recently Spin Me Round (2022).

Ten years of love and a discreet marriage

It was in 2011 that Jeff Baena met Aubrey Plaza. The couple remained very discreet about their relationship for 10 years, before announcing their wedding in May 2021 via an Instagram post. “So proud of my wonderful husband @jeffbaena who dreams of a new movie that takes us to Italy to do more mischief“, the actress had written in the caption.

The director and his muse had collaborated together on several records, notably on Life After Beth. Aubrey Plaza had confided to about her husband: “When you're with someone from the same background, they understand what you're going through on a deeper level. We're able to support each other and really understand the journey we're both on“. A beautiful bond that was abruptly broken. Our deepest condolences to Aubrey Plaza and Jeff Baena's loved ones.
