Bad weather in the Gard: the Gardon rises by two meters in two hours, several bridges closed to traffic

Spread the love

The stormy episode that hits the Cévennes this Thursday, January 30th, naturally causes a rise in water levels, prompting vigilance.

The Cévennes and Gard are not placed on orange or red alert by Météo France, but it is natural to note a natural rise in water levels in the Gardons this Tuesday, January 30th due to the stormy period affecting the massif.

Rising water levels and landslide

In two hours this afternoon, the Gardon rose by two meters at Alès. The flow rate increased from 25 to 250 m3/s in two hours. In the city center, the banks are affected by the waters, without, however, at this time, seeing an overflow of the bed.

A little further upstream, in Sainte-Cécile d’Andorge, the torrential waters flow over the Camboux dam. Beyond the impressive image, the water level, on this part, remains below the assessed flood risks. But the event is still notable at this time of year.

However, caution should be exercised by motorists driving in the commune: the RD276 in Sainte-Cécile has been closed since 5 p.m. following a landslide.

Inaccessible bridges

As for traffic, caution on the roads is required. The Gard Department has indicated the closure of several submersible bridges due to the risk of submersion:

RD906 Temporary bridge of Chamborigaud (reopening if possible Friday January 31 at 9 a.m. after inspection of the structure) RD106 Cassagnoles Bridge in Vézénobres RD187C Bridge over the Cèze in Rochegude RD284A Massiès Bridges in Thoiras RD187A Bridge over the Cèze in Rivières RD386 Grand Tournant Bridge in Peyremale

The risk of runoff should last until the end evening.
