A bank account, life insurance and ten houses: this is the legacy of a mysterious donor to the town of Escoville, in Calvados, an early Christmas present announced last November to Mayor Christophe Cliquet.

In a few days, the 850 inhabitants of the village will know the identity of the generous donor, “Monette”, as she is still nicknamed, indicates Ici Normandie (ex-France Bleue), which tells the beautiful story. “Monette” died last August, at the age of 88, and made Escoville her sole heir.

Christophe Cliquet plans to lift the mystery during his New Year's greetings to the population on January 18: he will reveal who is hiding behind Monette, who had lived in Escoville for a time.

For the elected official, it is already necessary to get over the shock of the announcement: “When reading the will, my secretary and my first assistant look at each other. Eyes wide open, my shoulders drop. I try to calculate in my head as the assets are listed. But at one point, I can no longer calculate the total financial amount that could fall back into the commune's coffers,” told the mayor to Ici Normandie.

With two conditions

Part of the sum has already been allocated. According to the wishes of the donor, who set two conditions: maintain three tombs in the cemetery, including her own, and renovate the church.

“This financial income will contribute to the restoration of the church, which is generally in good condition. These are not colossal works, but we want all the assets bequeathed by Monette to go towards the work of the church for several years”, declared Christophe Cliquet to Ici Normandie.
