Nicknamed the “Smuggler's Republic” by Louis XIV, Banyuls-sur-mer was for a long time a town that was rebellious to the authorities. Today it is a small, quiet fishing port, focused on biodiversity and tourism. On its heights, you can visit the Mediterranean Garden of Mas de la Serre, made up of more than 300 plant species. Banyuls is also the location of the oldest aquarium on the Mediterranean coast, created over 125 years ago.
