Bear attack leaves two dead in Banff National Park, Alberta

A bear attack in Banff National Park, Alberta, left two dead, according to Parks Canada.

The agency received an alert of a bear attack from a GPS device in the Red Deer River Valley around 8 p.m. Friday , says Natalie Fay, external relations manager for Parks Canada in Banff.

In a statement, Ms Fay explains that a response team trained in wild animal attacks was immediately mobilized, but that the Weather conditions did not permit the use of a helicopter, leading rescuers to travel to the scene by land overnight.

She points out that the team arrived at 1 a.m. and found two people dead.

According to Ms. Fay , the response team encountered an aggressive grizzly bear in the area, which led Parks Canada staff to euthanize it for the safety of the public.

RCMP arrived at 5 a.m. to transport the victims to Sundre, Alberta, and the attack zone was kept closed as a safety precaution.
