Benjamin Fayet can smile. With his teammates from the 400 Team, Sandrine Béranger, Sébastien Raichon and Adrien Lhermet, the Mendois came out on top in the adventure raid world championship, ahead of 26 other countries. The participants set off from the south of the Equator for a 620 km course with 20,000 km of elevation gain. All while navigating using only a map and a compass! The 400 Team completed the race in four days, with only 2.5 hours of sleep. A great feat: some participants took two extra days to cross the finish line.

Running, mountain biking and kayaking

The raid is mainly based on three disciplines, running, mountain biking and canoeing, to which are added so-called “rope” events such as canyoning, via ferrata and abseiling. The specificity of the adventure raid world championship is that it is run only by team. An additional constraint, since the team members must synchronize their stride.

But also a source of motivation. ” Sharing as a team gives a higher dimension, assures Benjamin Fayet. It's incredible what the body is capable of taking, we have to move forward for everyone. The investment would not be the same if we were alone. “

The youngest winner

Too modest the Lozérien raider ? Probably a little. It was indeed his first participation in a championship of this dimension. He is also the youngest winner of the event. To reach this level, it took him twelve years of practice. “Until then, I played football. Then I met a friend who was in the Lozère Sport nature association. Together, we started cycling. We did a first raid, then two and so on. It's quite addictive.“

“The feeling that nothing can happen to us”

The engineer specializing in mechanics then developed a passion for this discipline which brings sensations that you can't find anywhere else. “You have to taste it to understand it. You feel a kind of shift after 24-30 hours of sport. The body changes its metabolism. You start to ignore what's going on around you. You feel like nothing can happen to you.“

Raiding obviously requires a certain amount of physical preparation. Benjamin Fayet plans “one or two big outings” every weekend and a jog during the week. Mentality also counts for a lot. “The most important thing is to arrive rested, physically and mentally fresh,” assures the champion. You have to want to go.“

A new title in 2025 ?

Thanks to its victory, the 400 Team has secured its ticket to the 2025 world championships. Benjamin Fayet already sees himself on the starting line. “I had joked that I would stop when I was world champion. But this kind of adventure is so emotional. Once you've tasted it, you just want to go back and do it again. “
