US President Joe Biden remains “absolutely” in the race for the White House, his campaign manager said on Friday, despite growing doubts about his physical and mental capacity to assume a second term.

Since his disastrous performance during his June 27 debate with Donald Trump, Mr. Biden has been in turmoil. In recent days, several elected Democrats have urged him to throw in the towel, fearing that their party will be defeated in the November 5 election.

For now , the president is holding on.

“Joe Biden is more determined than ever to beat Donald Trump,” said his campaign manager, Jen O’Malley Dillon, at the MSNBC channel.

“The president is the leader of our campaign and the country,” she added. “He is clearly […] the best person to take on Donald Trump.”

“You've heard it straight from the president over and over again: He's running to win, he is our candidate and he is going to be our president for a second term,” she insisted.

The manager nevertheless recognized that the latest weeks had been “difficult” for the campaign team.

“We have seen, it is undeniable, a certain drop in support, but it is a small movement,” she said.
