US President Joe Biden on Tuesday ordered the US military to “help Israel defend itself” against the attack launched by Iran and to “shoot down missiles” targeting the US ally, the White House said.

The outgoing president and his vice president, Kamala Harris, who is running in the Nov. 5 election, both watched the attack from the White House Situation Room.

A scheduled call between Biden and rabbis on Tuesday, on the eve of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, has been postponed to a later date, an administration official said.

The United States had already helped Israel intercept Iranian missiles on April 13, fired in response to a deadly strike blamed on Israel on the Iranian consulate in Damascus.
