Guest on the France Inter morning show this Monday, February 3, Bill Gates delivered a full-scale critique of social networks. And the co-founder of Microsoft did not mince his words regarding the harmful effects of these services.
The leader particularly highlights the negative impact on children who spend a lot of time on them. And Bill Gates slipped a confidence:
I stopped my kids from going on social media too much until they were 14 or 15, and I tried to follow what they were doing. And I think we need to do more in this area. We've been a little naive about the impact of these tools.
He also addressed the recent decisions of Mark Zuckerberg, who ended the fact-checking service on Meta platforms, while Elon Musk advocates total freedom of expression while fiercely censoring anyone who opposes him:
200% Deposit Bonus up to €3,000 180% First Deposit Bonus up to $20,000I fear this is a problem that the younger generation will have to solve. Of course, freedom of speech is something that sounds great, but leaving this fake news and all these lies circulating on social media (…) I think it’s a problem that is unresolved for now.
As a reminder, Bill Gates has already spoken out in the past about the negative effects of screens on children. In 2017, the entrepreneur explained that he limited their exposure as much as possible: “We don't have cell phones at the table when we eat. We didn't give our kids cell phones until they were 14, and they complained that other kids got them earlier.”
And he's not the only big tech boss to have spoken out on this hot topic. For example, Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, already confided in 2018: “I have nephews to whom I set limits. There are certain things I wouldn’t allow them to do. I wouldn’t want to see them on a social network.” Feel free to check out our previous article which goes into more detail on the subject here.
