It’s becoming a good habit. As Christmas approaches, Bill Gates presents his reading tips and books that he particularly enjoyed over the past year. While the luckiest among us will have a little free time for the holidays, the co-founder of Microsoft gives us 5 suggestions related to new technologies (but not only) to read by the fire. Note that most of them are aimed at an English-speaking audience, but it is not excluded that a French translation will be offered in the future.

An Unfinished Love Story, by Doris Kearns Goodwin

Bill Gates particularly appreciates this autobiography by the author whose late husband was a policy expert and speechwriter for Presidents Kennedy and Johnson during a pivotal period in American history with the assassination of JFK and the Vietnam War.

The Anxious Generation, by Jonathan Haidt

This book addresses the issue of raising children in a world populated by screens. Bill Gates finds it salutary: “Haidt explains how the transition from a childhood based on play to a childhood based on the phone transforms the way children develop and process their emotions. I appreciate that he doesn't just state the problem, but offers real solutions that are worth considering.”.

Engineering in Plain Sight, by Grady Hillhouse

This book looks at the various objects that mark the modern world and popularizes them to the general public. It notably mentions mobile phone towers, or even decoders and transformers. Enough to satisfy the most curious among us.

The Coming Wave, by Mustafa Suleyman

In this book, the author discusses the major innovations of the moment and to come. It is particularly about AI, but also about the next expected scientific advances, such as gene editing, which could change the world as we know it, for better or for worse.

Federer, by Doris Henkel

If Bill Gates finds this book ” quite expensive “, he nevertheless emphasizes that it is the best retrospective dedicated to the life and career of the Swiss tennis champion. The entrepreneur suggests offering it to a fan of this sport for Christmas.

As a reminder, renowned entrepreneurs have made a habit of giving away some reading advice. Recently, we presented the suggestions of Jeff Bezos, who presented 5 books that inspired him in his entrepreneurial journey. To find out more, click here.
