Bluetooth 6.0 has just been announced: here is the new feature that will change everything

Bluetooth is a technology that is constantly evolving. Indeed, the Bluetooth Special Interest Group, responsible for its standardization, publishes new versions that offer technical improvements or new features. And precisely this week, the Bluetooth SIG announced the availability of the sixth version of the Bluetooth Core Specification or Bluetooth 6.0. This new version has many advantages over older technologies, but there is a very interesting new feature that has particularly attracted the attention of the media. Called Channel Sounding, it will allow products compatible with the Bluetooth 6.0 standard to know the distance between them.

And, concretely, Bluetooth 6.0 will therefore help us locate our connected accessories more easily. Indeed, the Channel Sounding feature allows devices to know the exact distance between them. In an era where people are increasingly using wireless headphones, this new feature will be extremely practical. “This innovation brings true distance awareness, introducing transformative benefits to a variety of applications. The user experience of Find My solutions can be greatly improved, making locating lost items easier and faster,” says the Bluetooth SIG. In addition, this new Bluetooth feature will improve the security of electronic keys. Indeed, it will be possible to authorize the opening of a door only when the Bluetooth device holding the key is within a certain distance.

A new chapter for wireless connectivity

Unfortunately, while the standard is now official, we will still have to wait to see it arrive on commercial products. But in any case, Bluetooth 6.0 will bring new and very useful features to our smartphones and to the various connected accessories in the coming years. Moreover, it is possible that by then, developers or device manufacturers will discover new functions that rely on this new Bluetooth feature.

Of course, Bluetooth 6.0 brings other important improvements. For example, this new standard should also please gamers who use wireless headphones or headsets, since the Bluetooth SIG promises an improvement in latency. This has improved a component called Isochronous Adaptation Layer (ISOAL) to provide a mode of operation that significantly reduces this latency when necessary.
