ChatGPT creator is interested in robots and his plans are slowly being revealed

OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, is also interested in robotics. In May 2024, a Forbes article, citing sources familiar with the matter, indicated that OpenAI had resurrected its robotics division, after closing it in 2020. In November, the company also hired Caitlin Kalinowski, the former head of Meta augmented reality glasses, to lead a branch dedicated to robotics and hardware products.

In a recent publication on X, it indirectly announced that OpenAI is developing robots, by presenting three new positions to be filled. For example, OpenAI is looking for an engineer who will develop the sensors for its robots. The company is also looking for an engineer who will design “gears, actuators, motors, and linkages for robots.”

Soon, ChatGPT on a humanoid ?

It is also worth noting that OpenAI is collaborating with a startup called Figure, which is developing humanoid robots comparable to Tesla’s Optimus robots. ChatGPT’s creator is one of Figure’s investors (along with Microsoft and Nvidia). But on top of that, OpenAI and Figure have also signed a partnership agreement “to develop next-generation AI models for humanoid robots, combining OpenAI’s research with Figure’s deep knowledge of robotics hardware and software.”

“We always intended to return to robotics, and we see Figure as a path to explore what humanoid robots can achieve when fed high-performance multimodal models,” an OpenAI executive said in a press release announcing the partnership in 2024. Among the technologies developed by OpenAI’s former robotics division is a robotic hand capable of solving a Rubik’s Cube, which was unveiled in 2019.

In any case, robotics could become a very lucrative sector in a few years. For example, according to a Goldman Sachs analysis published in 2024, the market for humanoid robots could be worth $38 billion by 2035.
