OpenAI regularly offers new features to users of its free version. And recently, it announced the availability of the Canvas feature for everyone. As a reminder, ChatGPT Canvas was announced in October. However, until today, this interface was reserved for users of the paid version.
What is it ?
By default, we use ChatGPT on a chatbot-type interface. We send a prompt and the AI generates the requested content. Then, we can ask it to make changes, refine the result, etc. But on Canvas, we will rather have the impression of working on a collaborative space with artificial intelligence. The tool is designed for those who use ChatGPT to generate text or to code.
In the example below, I ask Canvas to generate a subscription cancellation email. As usual, the AI generates a draft, with spaces for information about me and the company with which I want to cancel a subscription.

On the new interface, the text is displayed on the right, while ChatGPT is accessible on a sidebar. And instead of copying and pasting the text, to add information, I can for example give a list of information and ask ChatGPT to complete the email with it. The AI then takes care of updating the draft, on the Canvas. Obviously, this is a very simple example, but it illustrates the usefulness of this new interface.

A major asset for developers
This tool is even more useful for coders, who will be able to easily chat with the AI to edit computer code on the Canvas. In addition, OpenAI has just announce the ability to run Python code directly on canvases, so that ChatGPT can fix any bugs in the code.
And for those who want a more tailored experience, OpenAI also allows GPTs (modified versions of ChatGPT for specific uses) to be used in canvases. To use Canvas, simply go to the web version or desktop app of ChatGPT, click the tools icon, and select Canvas.
