The residents of 116 municipalities in Orne, and more specifically the communities of Roumois and Bernay, have been required to be equipped with smart household waste bins since January 1st. The chips on these bins are of capital importance, since they determine part of the amount of their household waste taxes. Explanations.

How it works ?

France 3 Normandiereturned to this experiment. The process is simple. Once the collection truck has emptied the contents of the bin, the chip is read. Quoted by our colleagues, Valéry Beuriot, mayor of Brionne and vice-president of “Précoval”(public waste treatment service for the West of Eure) explains the reasons for this launch:

The principle is to present your bin when it is full, as infrequently as possible to reduce the volume of waste and therefore the bill paid in the end.

And this new process is anything but a detail, since 25% of the amount paid now depends on the number of collections. The idea is to encourage residents to reduce the volume of waste, but also to sort it correctly and to use of composters.

Other examples in France

This initiative is not an isolated case in France. In December 2023, Toulouse Métropole announced its intention to affix chips to household waste and selective sorting bins. Vincent Terrail-Novès, 1st Vice-President of this community, explained to Actu Toulouse :

We are going to start work on chipping the bins, to be able to identify them and, if we decide one day, set up a pricing service based on entries and exits.

The elected official then added: “This system could indeed make it possible to establish incentive pricing, but also, failing that, incentive communication, to raise awareness among people who are above the norm and produce more waste than others, in order to target prevention on these outbreaks. »

What do you think of this idea and would you like to see it adopted by your municipality ? On the contrary, do you prefer the current system ? Let us know in the comments.

What to remember :

  • Residents of many municipalities in Eure are required to use a bin equipped with a chip
  • The idea is to count the number of collections
  • The ambition is also to encourage waste sorting
