The DDoS attack is one of the most common attacks. It consists of sending a very large volume of requests to the targeted system, in order to crash it. And in its 2024 report, published a few days ago, the company Cloudflare reports an attack that, according to it, is the largest ever observed. This was launched on October 29 and targeted an East Asian internet service provider.

In its publication, Cloudflare refers to “a 5.6 Tbps UDP DDoS attack launched by a botnet using a Mirai variant”. It lasted 80 seconds and was launched from over 13,000 IoT devices. “The average contribution from each IP address was approximately 1 Gbps per second (approximately 0.012% of 5.6 Tbps),” the company also said.

The good news is that despite the scale of the attack, the targeted company was protected thanks to Cloudflare’s anti-DDoS measures. Moreover, no human intervention was required, since the detection and mitigation of the attack was ensured by an automated system.

21.3 million DDoS attacks in 2024

In its report, Cloudflare also indicates that its automated systems blocked a total of 21.3 million DDoS attacks in 2024. Compared to 2023, this corresponds to an increase of 53%. The company also explains that it blocks, on average, 4,870 such attacks per hour.

The company also mentions an increase in the most serious threats in the last quarter. “[…] the number of attacks exceeding 1 Tb/s increased by 1,885% compared to the previous quarter, while the number of attacks exceeding 100 million p/s (packets per second) increased by 175% over the same period. 16% of attacks exceeding 100 million pps also exceeded 1 billion pps,” Cloudflare writes.

  • DDoS attacks involve bombarding the target with requests to crash them
  • According to Cloudflare, the largest attack ever observed was launched on October 29 against an Asian ISP
  • This is a 5.6 Tb/s attack launched from 13,000 devices
  • However, it was automatically detected by Cloudflare’s automated systems and did not even require human intervention
  • The company also reports an increase in hypervolume DDoS attacks in the last quarter
