Coffee badging: what is this new trend at work that is making Amazon angry ?

Since the Covid-19 pandemic, our work habits have changed considerably. While teleworking was relatively rare, the multiple confinements forced employees to get started. Four years later, teleworking has become part of daily life for many companies. But the latter want to see their employees again!

Today, work is increasingly hybrid. But if it has made a place for itself in our everyday lives (and in our hearts), rules concerning teleworking are gradually being imposed by companies, including a number of days of teleworking granted to employees.

Who says new work habits, says new terms to designate them. Thus, the term “coffee badging” appeared. This refers to the fact that employees show up at the office rather furtively, often to have a coffee and “show off” for a few hours, before going home and finishing their work day. In this way, they respect the rules regarding teleworking and are “on target”. It’s stupid and mean, but they are actually in the office during their mandatory attendance days. Plus, it’s a good way to bond with colleagues.

“Coffee badging” is a subtle way of circumventing the rules in place. But inevitably, companies do not view this new habit very favorably. Indeed, presenteeism is still deeply rooted in our society.

While companies like Amazon have imposed these teleworking rules to revitalize office life and strengthen links between employees, the trend of “coffee badging” is coming against them. Obviously, this pushed the giant to tighten its rules.

Thus, Amazon intends to establish a minimum number of hours that employees must spend in the office each day. This can range from 2 to 6 hours depending on the services. Also to counter “coffee badging”, Amazon has strengthened monitoring of office attendance. Finally, the company does not hesitate to address employees who are a little too fond of this trend and who, in their eyes, do not spend enough time in the office.

The emergence of “coffee badging” highlights a real divide between the desire of companies and the desire of employees to benefit ever more from teleworking and an ever more flexible working method. Not sure that the tightening of rules regarding teleworking will ease tensions.
