The release in December of a newly found photo of the girl has helped solve the longest-running missing person investigation by British police. And the conclusion has nothing to do with a criminal case.
They searched for her for almost 52 years, and finally managed to solve the mystery of her disappearance, thanks to the success of a final appeal for witnesses. The British police of the West Midlands, a region of England that corresponds to the Birmingham metropolitan area, announces this January 1, 2025 a story in the form of a Christmas tale, the conclusion of which puts an end to one of the longest investigations on a cold case ever conducted in the country.

In 1972, Sheila Fox, a 16-year-old teenager who was then living with her parents, suddenly disappears in the center of Coventry, and will never give any sign of life again, which will trigger the opening of an investigation, which will remain at a standstill for decades.
The investigations carried out at the time suggested that it could This was a voluntary disappearance, as the girl was in a romantic relationship with an older man at the time. However, her identity never reappeared, even at the administrative level, and the case was therefore never closed.
The oldest and most difficult investigations
It was recently taken over by the West Midlands Police Cold Case Division, “which takes on the oldest, most difficult investigations that have remained unsolved. With advances in forensic science, this service can open up new leads that were not necessarily possible when investigations began.”
This is how Shaun Reeve, who was in charge of the case, very recently found an old photo of Sheila Fox, which he posted on social media on December 27, launching an appeal for witnesses from the public.
“Our officers were able to speak to her”
Within hours, the police received a witness statement that allowed them to find the missing person, who is alive and well and living in another part of the country. “Our officers were able to speak to her and confirm that she is doing well. We are absolutely delighted to have found Sheila after 50 years of investigating,” said Sergeant Jenna Shaw of the Cold Case Division.
It appears that this was a voluntary disappearance, and Sheila was able to continue her life without resuming contact with her family, possibly living under an assumed name.
The police have declined to provide further details about the reasons for her disappearance and the life that Sheila, now 68, has led since then.
