A 9-year-old boy hanged with his judo belt

#MONTPELLIER – On Tuesday, January 28, a terrible tragedy occurred in Montpellier. Around 10 p.m., the lifeless body of a 9-year-old boy was discovered by his mother in the family bathroom where he was hanging with a judo belt, in cardio-respiratory arrest. Despite the intervention of emergency services, the child could not be resuscitated. Suicide ? A game gone wrong ? “The initial investigations established that the boy lived in a fulfilling educational environment. No harassment concerning him was found”, the prosecutor said. Furthermore, the autopsy did not reveal any abnormality suggesting the intervention of a third party. The investigation is continuing.

#HERAULT – This is the sum in euros that a teacher from Agde has been ordered to pay because of her cat. At the center of the dispute is Rémi, Dominique's cat, guilty of crossing the neighbor's property, and therefore preventing him from fully enjoying his garden. And there was little or nothing to suggest the court's decision, which ordered the cat's owner to pay her neighbor €450, as well as €800 in compensation for her lawyer's fees. “It's absurd. How do you expect me to explain to my cat that he has to change his route ?”

Cigarette smuggling: tobacconists are shouting their anger

#OCCITANIE –In Montpellier, Béziers, Nîmes and elsewhere in France, tobacconists mobilized on Monday, February 3, 2025 to demand concrete and urgent action to limit this well-known cigarette smuggling trade. “On some packets, we are at 13 euros. They are at 7 euros. In Spain, it is 5.50 euros. We can't resist”, deplores Pascal, who lives in the Plan-Cabanes district of Montpellier. “In 2024, nearly 40% of the tobacco consumed by the French came from the parallel market”, assures Jérémy Pézières, the president of the Hérault tobacconists’ federation, who fears that this already worrying situation will worsen. In Paris, tobacconists went to the National Assembly. They are demanding a moratorium on the increase in cigarette packet prices and more controls on street sales, which could represent half of the market by the end of 2025.

Mohamed Haouas’ trial postponed after a hiccup

#MONTPELLIER –A legal glitch led to the postponement of the “guilty plea” hearing of rugby player Mohamed Haouas, which was to be held this Tuesday, February 4, 2025 at the Montpellier judicial court. The prop is to be prosecuted for drunk driving after being found asleep in his car, engine running and double-parked, in early December. The player was to learn this morning of the prosecutor's proposal, namely 3 months in prison, before accepting it or not. Problem: the prosecution indicated on Monday the sentence that it intended to request to its lawyer Maître Gallix who also reacted to explain that it would refuse. “A confidential element has been disclosed, the proposal is no longer relevant”, reacted the prosecutor Fabrice Bellargent.

Arènes de Nîmes: Casas at the heart of a dispute

#NÎMES – Before the municipal council of this February 8 which must ratify the allocation of the public service delegation of bullfighting shows in Nîmes, a dramatic turn of events! After the submission of the files, two candidates had been selected: SAS Casas & Co, alias Simon Casas, and SAS ADT (Callet, Miletto, Cadenas and Miralles). However, even before the winner is revealed, the SASA ADT list contests the award of the DSP of the arenas to Simons Casas. It denounces “irregularities, calling into question the transparency and fairness of the selection process” and has taken the matter to court in order to obtain a new evaluation of the offers.
