Cyberattack: nearly 2 million credit card numbers stolen

What data is affected ?

In a statement published on its website and spotted by 01.net, the Florida-based company reports that a hacker has broken into its systems between August 17, 2023 and June 15, 2024.

Affected individuals who made credit card payments on the websites Slim CD’s payment gateway works with in the United States and Canada began receiving breach notifications a few days ago. Their names, addresses, credit card numbers and expiration dates have been compromised.

Good news in their misfortune: The attacker, whose identity is unknown, was unable to obtain the visual cryptogram (CVV), i.e. the three numbers on the back of the card. As a result, he cannot use the stolen data to make online purchases.

Possible identity theft

But there are other ways to use them for malicious purposes such as identity theft, especially if the data is combined with other information already disclosed in previous leaks. Cybercriminals can thus create a complete profile of the victim to impersonate them. Similarly, stolen information can be resold on the dark web.

In another scenario, scammers may potentially contact the victim to attempt to obtain additional information, such as their credit card CVV code, by posing as a trusted institution.

” Slim CD takes confidentiality, privacy, and the security of the information in its possession very seriously. Upon discovery of this incident, we promptly began a thorough investigation and took steps to implement additional safeguards and review our policies and procedures related to data confidentiality and security ,” the company says. It works with several industries, including retail, hospitality, and restaurants.

The company also sent breach notification letters to the attorneys general of the states of Maine, California and Vermont.
