Cyclone Chido in Mayotte: Prime Minister François Bayrou to visit the island on Sunday and Monday

After the passage of Cyclone Chido, François Bayrou will make his first trip to Mayotte as Prime Minister. Bruno Retailleau and then Emmanuel Macron had been there in recent weeks.

François Bayrou will travel to Mayotte, ravaged by Cyclone Chido, on Sunday, December 29 and Monday, December 30, as we learned on Thursday, December 26, following a meeting on the situation on the island. A day of national mourning was declared on Monday, December 23. The human toll from Cyclone Chido stands at 39 dead and more than 4,000 injured, according to a new count published Tuesday by the Prefect of Mayotte. Before him, Emmanuel Macron and Bruno Retailleau had also visited the site.

François Bayrou held a meeting on Wednesday from Pau by videoconference with several ministers on the situation in the archipelago, particularly on the issue of reconstruction and housing. A new meeting was held this Thursday at Matignon. Reinforcements have come from mainland France and a special law will be presented to the Assembly to facilitate the reconstruction of the island.

Élisabeth Borne and Manuel Valls to accompany her

The Prime Minister will be accompanied by the Minister of State for Education, Higher Education and Research, Élisabeth Borne, as well as the Minister of State for Overseas Territories, Manuel Valls.

Valérie Létard, Minister of Housing, and Yannick Neuder, Minister of Health, as well as the Minister Delegate and former Senator of Mayotte, Thani Mohamed Soilihi, in charge of Francophonie and International Partnerships, will also be on the trip.

Chido is the most devastating cyclone to hit Mayotte in 90 years and caused colossal damage on December 14 in France's poorest department, where relief efforts have since been working to restore essential services such as water, electricity and communications networks.
