Director David Lynch (Twin Peaks, Mulholland Drive) died on January 15, 2025 at the age of 78.

IN BRIEF

  • David Lynch died on January 15, a few days before his 79th birthday, from pulmonary emphysema.
  • The fires in Los Angeles are said to have aggravated his illness, forcing him to leave his home.
  • His children are calling for a global meditation to honor his legacy on January 20.

Could David Lynch's death have been hastened by the wildfires ravaging Los Angeles ? On January 15, the genius director died, just days before his 79th birthday. “It is with deep sorrow that we his family announce the passing of the man and artist David Lynch. There is a great void in the world now that he is no longer with us,” his family wrote in a statement.

Later, it was learned that the Mulholland Drive director was suffering from pulmonary emphysema. In November, David Lynch revealed that he needed extra oxygen to walk. A disease that eventually took him away, and that was aggravated by the Los Angeles fires. According to Deadline, “he was forced to move out of his house because of the flames, the situation then deteriorated”.

David Lynch: What was he suffering from ?

In an interview with Sight & Sound magazine last year, David Lynch revealed that due to his fears of Covid and his emphysema diagnosis, he could no longer leave his house. “I can barely walk across a room. It's like I'm walking with a plastic bag around my head, he described his health. David Lynch had been ill for several years and was rarely seen.

“Yes, I suffer from emphysema because of my many years of smoking,” wrote the legendary director in a humorous message published on Twitter. “I have to say that I enjoyed smoking a lot and I love tobacco – the smell of it, lighting cigarettes, smoking them – but there is a price to pay for this pleasure and that price for me is emphysema. I have now stopped smoking for over two years,” he continued.

His four children call “a worldwide meditation session”

After the death of the director of Twin Peaks, his four children broke silence in a moving message. “David Lynch, our beloved father, was brilliant in creativity, and peace. This Monday, January 20th – what would have been his 79th birthday – we invite you all to join us for a ten-minute global meditation session”, they wrote in their first speech since his passing.

“Make sure we are together, no matter where we are, to honor his legacy and share love and peace across the world”, they continue before thanking David Lynch's admirers for “celebrating his life”. And to sign: “Affectionately, Jennifer, Austin, Riley and Lula”. Their dad's many fans will still have a thought for him on this very special day.
