The news has shocked the world of French cinema. On January 21, à 85 years old, the filmmaker Bertrand Blier has died, leaving behind masterpieces of the 7th art.
He is the one who is responsible for many great classic films. He is notably the creator of Tenue de soirées, Les Valseuses and Buffet froid. We also owe him Prepare your handkerchiefs, a work that earned him the Oscar for best foreign film in 1979.
The sad news was announced by the French filmmaker's relatives to Agence France-Presse. His son Léonard declared that he died “peacefully at home in Paris, surrounded by his wife and children”. He also informed AFP that the director's funeral will take place on Wednesday, January 29, 2025 at the Saint Roch church in Paris at 10:30 a.m.. Bertrand Blier will then be buried at the Montmartre cemetery.

On X, the National Center of Cinema wrote “Bertrand Blier leaves us a filmography in his image: nonconformist, irreverent, sometimes provocative and taboo-breaking, but always tinged with tenderness and traversed with a crazy poetry”. On Instagram, Jean Dujardin also spoke out by writing “What a privilege to have filmed for you. You were a boss. A friend. An inventor in the cinema. Your poetry, your audacity, your words, your laughter, your silences… You loved actors so much”.
It was in 1939 that the filmmaker Bertrand Blier was born in Boulogne-Billancourt, in the Paris region. Passionate always with cinema, he began his career as an assistant director. He directed his first film a few years later, If I Was a Spy, released in 1967.
His career took a new turn in 1974, with his film Les Valseuses, starring Gérard Depardieu. He then went on to masterpieces and awards. His work Too beautiful for you, released in 1989, earned him the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival and five Césars.
On the private side, Bertrand Blier has had several companions. He married for the first time at the age of 20. He then made a new life with two actresses.
He first lived with Catherine Florin, before living a love story with Anouk Grinberg. He ended his life alongside Farida Rahouadj. Bertrand Blier had a child with each of them: Béatrice, Léonard and Leila.
