IN BRIEF

  • Despite a lucrative career, Sulitzer lost his fortune mainly due to a costly divorce and legal fees related to legal affairs.
  • Discover how the author of 'Money' ended up living modestly despite a career marked by literary and financial success.

During his career, he sold more than 40 million books. Paul-Loup Sulitzer, a successful French businessman and writer, died this Thursday, February 6 at the age of 78. The news was communicated by his daughter, who spoke to AFP. “He died this morning at the hospitalfrom a stroke”, declared Olivia Sulitzer, specifying that her father had been in the hospital for several days following a fall.

While he had long been one of the great French fortunes, Paul-Loup Sulitzer left behind only a very small sum of money. In April 2023, during his appearance on the show Chez Jordan on C8, he revealed that he had lost almost all of his of his fortune during his divorce from Delphine Jacobson, who wanted, according to him, “à his money“.

A fortune completely squandered

“I earned up to 250,000&euros per month. Net, he had confided to Jordan De Luxe. I had a bank account of 40,000,000&euros;.”Who is frozen ?“, the host had then asked him. “No, who flew away. I had a terrible divorce with a woman who targeted my money. She was the granddaughter of a big bandit.” Paul-Loup Sulitzer had then revealed that this divorce had cost him “20 million euros, at the time.” “I lost 50 million euros,” he continued.

Paul-Loup Sulitzer also squandered part of his estate through his own doing. Indicted in the arms sales to Angola case in 2000 and then convicted of “concealment of misuse of corporate assets”, he had to spend huge sums on lawyers' fees.

“Once my reserves were exhausted, I lived without money,” revealed Paul-Loup Sulitzer in 2023

As a result, the author of Money and The Empire of the Water Lily left behind his daily life of grandeur. He sold his assets in Saint-Tropez, in Paris and his ranch in Arizona, and rebuilt his life in Belgium, in a 100m2 Brussels apartment. “I ate my reserves, he had explained to Jordan de Luxe. Once my reserves were exhausted, I lived without money.” He had then specified living on a pension from barely 1200€.

It therefore seems clear that today there is not much left of the immense fortune of the “party king“. He leaves behind all his books, however, which should continue to bring in some royalties to his progeny.
