Without alcohol, the party is crazier, as the saying goes. It must be said that the world of Hollywood is synonymous with parties of all kinds, between galas, glitter, ceremonies and red carpets. While glasses of champagne are quickly distributed to everyone, some celebrities refuse them outright, because they have drawn a definitive line under alcohol. Actress Blake Lively is the first example of this, as she stated in Allure in 2012: “I don't drink and I have never tried any drugs. It's not like I decided on this lifestyle and forced it on myself. It's just things I don't really want to do.”.
For his part, Daniel Radcliffe has stopped drinking, having fallen into alcoholism during the years when he played Harry Potter in the movies.“I change when I drink. There's this thing about people who drink in a harmful way, something that chaos attracts,”, he told the Telegraph in 2016, after being sober for 17 months. There was another reason Jennifer Lopez quit: beauty. “I think it damages your skin,”, she explained to InStyle magazine in 2003, before continuing : “Écially, when I have a toast at a party, everyone is like, 'You can't toast with water.' So I make a toast with alcohol and I just wet my lips.”.
Alcohol as an escape
After her overdose in July 2018, Demi Lovato decided to quit drinking. In January 2019, the singer proudly celebrated her six-month alcohol- and drug-free milestone on social media, revealing her badge certifying that she had been sober for six months. Since meeting his wife Susan Levin, Robert Downey Jr. has completely quit alcohol, having experienced a long period of emptiness due to alcohol and drug problems. Pharrell Williams, himself, has never been attracted to alcoholic beverages, nor even drugs. “Everyone can do as they want, but alcohol is not for me. I've been drunk nine times in my life and I've eaten marijuana brownies once,” he confided to Paper Magazine in 2004. Finally, we end with a movie star: Brad Pitt. In an interview for the magazine Interview, the actor confided in December 2019 about his former addiction to alcohol. “It was a wrong I inflicted on myself, like an escape”, Angelina Jolie's ex-husband admitted in all transparency.
