Despite Tesla's tenth place in best sales, new electric cars are still not taking off in France

In a global new car market in decline, sales of electric cars are slowing down. In 2024, slightly fewer were sold than in 2023. For their part, hybrid vehicles are more attractive to motorists. What are the best-selling cars in the country? ? We answer you.

The new car market is down 3.2% in 2024, according to figures published by the Automotive Platform (PFA). The causes ?: Europe for Luca de Meo, CEO of Renault. He predicts a 40% increase in electric cars by 2030. He explains that Europe is overwhelming car groups with restrictive measures, which will therefore have to mobilize energy and investments

Unsurprisingly, sales of thermal cars continue to fall, with gasoline now representing only 29.5% of all transactions and diesel only 7.3%. While the market share of hybrid cars is increasing significantly, going from 33.5% to 42.8% in one year, that of electric vehicles is stagnating at 16.9%. In terms of volume, fewer electric cars were sold in 2024 (291,143) than in 2023 (298,525). Note that sales of hydrogen or natural gas (NGV) vehicles remain confidential.

1.72 million electric cars registered

Registrations of new electric cars in France fell in 2024 with 1.72 million cars last year, the market is still very far from the 2.2 million of 2019.
