Sharing your account with other people so that they don’t have to pay a subscription was once tolerated by streaming services. But since 2023, Netflix has banned this practice. And for its part, its competitor Disney+ has been planning a similar measure for a while. In June, Disney’s streaming platform began cracking down in “a few countries,” but not yet in the United States, its home market. However, starting in September, Disney+ will move up a gear and should definitively end account sharing by its users. This was announced by CEO Bob Iger during a conference call.

The end of account sharing at Disney+

“We launched our password sharing initiative in June. It starts seriously in September”, he said. Iger also claims that there was no controversy when Disney+ began notifying its users about the end of account sharing on its platform. It remains to be seen how its users will react when Disney sends more notifications. In any case, like Netflix, Disney must end account sharing in order to support the growth of Disney+.

200% Deposit Bonus up to €3,000 180% First Deposit Bonus up to $20,000

In any case, at Netflix, the strategy worked. In the second quarter of 2023, after starting to crack down on users who share their passwords, the SVOD had added six million new subscribers. Otherwise, today, Netflix is also relying on its affordable offer, partially financed by advertising, to support its growth. And rumors even suggest that the company could launch a 100% free service thanks to advertising.

Disney: streaming finally generates profits

Otherwise, the quarter that ended at the end of June was also very important for Disney, since for the first time, its streaming business (Disney+, Hulu and ESPN Plus) generated profits. As The Verge explains, during the quarter, this activity allowed Disney to make a profit of $47 million. During the same period in 2023, this streaming activity still caused losses of $512 million.

  • Like Netflix, Disney+ no longer wants its users to share their passwords
  • In June, the platform began cracking down in certain countries
  • And in September, Disney+ will generalize its measures against password sharing
  • Its CEO claims that this change has not caused controversy
  • Putting an end to password sharing will allow Disney+ to support its growth while, for the first time, the group's streaming activity generated profits
