It's a setting worthy of the heroic fantasy universe. In Poland, on barely 1.7 hectares, some 400 pine trees defy the laws of nature with their spectacularly curved 90-degree trunks, all mysteriously oriented towards the north.
A real tourist attraction, this curiosity has continued to fuel scientific debates and local legends for almost a century.
At first glance, one might think it's a surrealist staging. Yet these octogenarian trees are very real. About 40 centimeters from the ground, each trunk forms a perfect loop before resuming vertical growth, reaching heights of 11 to 12 meters. The curvature can extend up to 3 meters on some specimens, creating a landscape that seems to come straight out of a fantasy tale.
Located near the town of Gryfino, on the German border, this forest fascinates visitors from all over the world. Its particularity? An almost perfect uniformity in the deformation of the trees, without any visible trace of human intervention. The inhabitants of the region say that their grandparents already spoke of this mystery, transmitted from generation to generation like a well-kept secret.
There are many theories to explain this extraordinary phenomenon. Some suggest human interventiondeliberate in the 1930s, during the German occupation, possibly for shipbuilding or furniture manufacturing. Another hypothesis suggests that World War II tanks crushed these young trees, forcing them to grow back at this particular angle.

Finally, scientists are talking about a specific forestry technique, similar to that used for the production of Christmas trees.
While other ’twisted” forests exist, such as the Pinatelle du Zouave in Haute-Loire, none presents such uniformity or such mystery. The pines of the French Pinatelle, twisted to fuel bakery ovens, display irregular curves and clearly bear the marks of human intervention.
What makes Krzywy Las truly unique is the total absence of evidence to explain this formation. No local archives provide an explanation and the testimonies of the elders do not provide a definitive answer. Scientists continue their investigations, using cutting-edge technologies such as DNA analysis and dendrochronology to try to unravel this mystery that is almost a century old.
Today, this extraordinary forest attracts not only curious onlookers and photographers from around the world, but also forestry researchers who hope that solving this enigma could provide new insights into the growth and adaptation of trees to extreme conditions.
