The top area of your phone's screen, often called the “status area”, is an information dashboard. It not only tells you about the time and the quality of your mobile network (hello 5G!) but also about the status of your Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connection.

Each icon has its role and among them, the N logo deserves special attention. This symbol indicates that the NFC (Near Field Communication) function of your smartphone is activated.

NFC is activated

NFC is a short-range wireless communication technology (invented by the French) that was designed to facilitate exchanges between nearby devices. Its most common use is in mobile payments – such as Apple Pay – and ticket control systems – such as the Navigo pass on iPhone. When you bring your phone close to a payment terminal or a ticket validation device, it is NFC that allows this quick and secure interaction.

If the N logo does not appear on your screen, it may mean that the NFC option is disabled. However, it is important to note that some recent smartphone models do not display this icon at all – even when NFC is enabled.

Permanently activating NFC has no real impact on the battery life of your smartphone because this function consumes very little energy. In addition, it does not pose any security risk: it is impossible for a payment to be made without your consent even if a device is nearby. Therefore, leaving NFC permanently activated does not involve any risk – especially for making contactless payments or validating transport tickets quickly.

If you prefer not to leave it on all the time, it's easy to turn it on or off as needed. To do so, head to your phone's settings. Open the “Connections and sharing” or “Connected devices” section, depending on your device model. If you want to save time, type “NFC” into the settings search bar to quickly access the option. Once found, simply toggle the switch next to NFC to turn it on or off.

Android vs iOS

It's important to note that the N icon is specific to Android smartphones. All iPhones since the iPhone 7 have NFC, but they don't have a visual indicator to show the status of this feature. On iOS, NFC is enabled by default but you can always disable it in the settings if you wish.
