Dog owner sentenced to prison for not taking care of his animal

A Miramichi man has been convicted Tuesday at the jail for willfully failing to provide water, food, shelter and necessary care for his dog.

Bernard Bouchard received a 45-day prison sentence which he will serve in his home, and a ban to possess animals for 20 years, restitution to be paid of $821 and a fine of $500, reports the New Brunswick SPCA.

Hugo Bouchard, who was also prosecuted, was fined $500 and banned from owning animals for 20 years.

The organization filed a complaint against the owners in June 2022. The SPCA received a report during that month for a neglected dog who appeared to have been chained all his life, writes the SPCA.

According to the association, the animal was dirty, very thin and had lost fur and its chain was buried in its neck. At the time, the owners of the animal had agreed to surrender their dog to the SPCA.

Renamed Link, the dog underwent emergency surgery to remove the chain, and he received several treatments allowing him to regain his strength, reports the organization. He has since found a new home.

The New Brunswick SPCA welcomes in a press release the excellent work of the animal protection officers who made this conviction possible.

Link is a very serious case of cruelty towards animals. The sentence imposed by the judge in this case should remind pet owners that if you don't take care of your animals, you risk facing serious consequences, said Tony Porter, chief of animal protection at the New Brunswick SPCA.

The organization emphasizes that calls for concerns about the well-being of animals have increased sharply in recent years. Between 2020 and 2023, serious cases of animal cruelty increased by 62%.
