Donald Trump Will Hate the Next Oscars: Here's Why

Spread the love

On Sunday, March 2, 2025, the traditional Oscar ceremony will be held at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles. If he glances at his television that evening, Donald Trump may well be grumpy. And for good reason, The Apprentice, a film that he tried to have censored and which depicts his economic rise in a very unflattering way, has obtained two nominations.

Two nominations for The Apprentice

Actors Sebastian Stan and Jeremy Strong will thus be represented in the categories of best actor and best supporting actor. Quoted by our colleagues at Business Insider, Gabriel Sherman, the author who wrote the screenplay for the film, rejoices:

Sebastian and Jeremy took career-defining risks in making this film. And they nailed their roles. It's also satisfying that the Academy is championing great art at a time when culture seems chilled by the new political climate.

This production traces the beginnings of the businessman and his meeting with his sulphurous mentor, Roy Cohn. A lawyer, the latter became a far-right political advisor, he is known for his aggressive methods based on intimidation, dissimulation and lies. A credo that later smiled on Donald Trump when he entered politics. The feature film also includes scenes that are clearly not tender towards the former president: erectile dysfunction, baldness, or even infidelity…

Donald Trump wanted to censor the film

This is not the first time that the Trump clan has attacked this production. Shortly before its release, his campaign's communications director, Steven Cheung, called its release ” election interference by Hollywood elites just before November “.

Not mincing his words, he added that The Apprentice is a ” pure malicious smear “ that ” doesn't even deserve a spot in the DVD section directly available in a bargain bin at a soon-to-be-closed discount movie store.” and which “should instead be thrown in a dumpster”.

The new president's legal team had also directly threatened the filmmakers in May 2024: “If you do not immediately cease all distribution and marketing of this defamatory farce, we will be forced to pursue all appropriate legal remedies”.
