Drowning in the Rideau River, another young person still missing

According to father and brother of the victim, their loved one was in the company of three other young people. They had gone skating on the river when they fell into the water.

A 17-year-old boy drowned in the Rideau River south of Ottawa near Barrhaven after falling through the ice on his way to Nicoll's Island around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday evening. The Ottawa Police Service (OPS) marine unit confirmed Thursday morning that they had recovered his body.

According to the victim's father and brother, their loved one was in the company of three other young people. They had gone skating on the river when they fell into the water.

Only one of the four teenagers, aged 16, still missing. The search was suspended early Thursday morning. According to authorities, the operation is expected to resume later today.

The divers of the Service Ottawa police conducted surface and water searches overnight from Wednesday to Thursday.

Paramedics say the other two youths, a 15-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy, were quickly rescued. They were transported to the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) and are in stable condition after being treated for hypothermia.

A paramedic services spokesperson, Kevin Montgomery, also confirms that an officer at the scene had to be transported to hospital in due to a diving emergency. The latter is in serious but stable condition.
