After going into space with Interstellar, and renewing the heist film with Inception, Christopher Nolan also tackled to the war movie with Dunkirk. In this feature film, the filmmaker immerses viewers in the heart of the Battle of Dunkirk, which took place in 1940. While critically acclaimed, this production nevertheless received a mixed reception from historians when it was released in 2017. Several media outlets reported critics, deploring the forgetting of important historical elements, such as the sacrifice of French soldiers.

In the direct line of Christopher Nolan's films, Dunkirk retains the filmmaker's obsession with temporal themes. It describes Operation Dynamo, also known as the Battle of Dunkirk, as a race against time. From May 20 to June 4, 1940, the British Army set up this operation to evacuate its soldiers present at Dunkirk, as Germany draws closer and surrounds the French city. During these few days in 1940, the battle rages between the ships sent by the United Kingdom to recover their soldiers, and the German army which bombards the beaches of Dunkirk and the open sea.

As in Christopher Nolan's feature film, British civilians have mobilized to bring their soldiers home: approximately 370 “Little Ships” left for Dunkirk in the hope of helping the soldiers. In total, at the end of this Operation Dynamo, 338,226 soldiers, including approximately 123,095 French, will be saved in this operation.

However, the film has received criticism for the way French soldiers were shown in Dunkirk. The latter are almost absent from the film, or sometimes shown as cowards. Several historians interviewed by the French media have noted that during the Battle of Dunkirk, between 35,000 and 40,000 French soldiers blocked the beaches and played a crucial role in the operation. They are said to have protected evacuation and were unable to embark themselves. They were taken prisoner by the German army on June 4, 1940. A sacrifice that is completely omitted in Christopher Nolan's production.

The theme is interesting though. Nolan has already done much better.
