Electronic drug leaflets tested since December 17: what is the benefit for the patient ?

Les notices de médicaments dématérialisées : quel intérêt pour le patient ?

Towards a modernization of medical information. Since December 17, the National Agency for the Safety of Medicines (ANSM) has been testing the dematerialization of drug leaflets. Objective: to improve access to information for patients and healthcare professionals.

Large folded sheets… and often impossible to fold. A very small font. Information that is incomprehensible for patients and sometimes even for healthcare professionals. It is not always easy to find your way around drug leaflets.

The National Agency for the Safety of Medicines (ANSM) has understood this well. This is why it has just launched a phase of tests for the dematerialization of these “instructions for use”. This project involves integrating QR codes on medicine boxes, allowing instant access to digital leaflets via the Public Medicines Database (BDPM).

The initiative will concern 93 medicines in the community, including paracetamol, statins and certain vaccines, as well as 474 medicines in hospitals.

A regular update

In concrete terms, what does this change? ? This initiative provides real added value: the leaflets will be regularly updated and enriched with additional content, including explanatory videos on the proper use of medicines. This innovation will allow users “to have access to the most recent information“, underlines the ANSM. Something that is not possible with the paper version.

The first stage of this pilot phase therefore began on December 17. It should last 2 years. A duration that should allow patient associations, in conjunction with health professionals and drug manufacturers, to evaluate the use and interest of these new information media.
