” Elon Musk is a smart person. Nothing stops him, he will do what he thinks he has to do. You have to find common ground with him, you have to look ways to persuade him”.

Reading this statement by Vladimir Putin during a recent interview with the controversial journalist Tucker Carlson, we understand that the Russian leader has a strong opinion on the American entrepreneur. It turns out that the two men know each other rather well if we are to believe the information in the Wall Street Journal.

According to our colleagues, who have spoken with various American, Russian and European sources, they have in fact been in regular telephone contact since the end of 2022. These revelations are enough to shake up the American presidential campaign a few days before the November 5 election, especially since the Kremlin has been under sanctions from Uncle Sam for several years and Elon Musk is a fervent supporter of Donald Trump, repeatedly accused of collusion with Russia.

Disturbing facts

According to the American media, Elon Musk has long been fascinated by Russia and its various space programs. He went to Moscow in 2002 to negotiate the purchase of rockets for SpaceX, which he had just founded. The sale would fail, and the businessman would even end up fainting from a meal washed down with too much vodka.

Much later, in October 2022, the billionaire publicly acknowledged having spoken to Vladimir Putin in the context of a discussion on space exploration in April 2021. Except that other secret discussions followed, specifies the Wall Street Journal.

The title even mentions exchanges with high-ranking figures in the Russian regime, including Sergei Kiriyenko, the first deputy chief of staff. Precisely, ” the US Department of Justice stated in a sworn statement that Kiriyenko had created about thirty Internet domains to spread Russian disinformation, notably on the social network X “, run by Elon Musk.

Ukraine at the heart of the issues

In February 2022, the SpaceX boss initially expressed support for Ukraine following the Russian invasion. He followed up his words with actions by providing 15,000 Starkink terminals to Ukrainians to provide free internet access in areas of the country destroyed by the attacks.

However, the entrepreneur gradually changed his mind. SpaceX began blocking Ukrainians from using its technology in offensive operations. Elon Musk has come clean, explaining that he believes an attack on Crimea could trigger a nuclear conflict.

The Wall Street Journal claims that his public stance coincides with private pressure from the Russian government. A source told the American media: ” Later in 2022, Musk was having regular conversations with high-level Russians. At the time, the Kremlin was pressuring Musk's businesses and “implicitly threatening him”.

Musk later instead committed to a pro-Russia peace plan that would mean Ukraine losing a lot of territory.

Reactions to the Revelations

Musk, who has been heavily implicated in the investigation, has declined to comment. In the past, he has called criticism from people who label him an apologist for Vladimir Putin “absurd” and noted that his companies “have done more to undermine Russia than any other.”.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov acknowledged an initial telephone conversation, but said there were no regular conversations between the two men. As for Donald Trump's campaign, it is rather evasive and specifies that Elon Musk is a ” unique industrial leader “ and that ” our failing federal bureaucracy could certainly benefit from his ideas and efficiency “.
