Billionaire Elon Musk has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, and its co-founders Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, accusing them of abandoning the original mission of the artificial intelligence (AI) software company.

According to documents filed Thursday with a San Francisco court, Elon Musk accuses OpenAI of& ;#x27;having violated the agreement at the origin of its development, according to which it was to remain a non-profit organization, working for the good of humanity.< /p>

Elon Musk co-founded OpenAI in 2015 as a non-profit organization working on computer software. #x27;artificial intelligence in open access (open source), therefore accessible, modifiable, usable and redistributable by everyone. The goal was not to let Google dominate this major technology.

The billionaire left OpenAI in 2018 and is now one of the people who virulently criticize the company. Elon Musk also founded his own artificial intelligence company, xAI, in 2023.

OpenAI has not made public the code of its most recent model language, GPT-4, which breaks the initial contract, Elon Musk's lawyers argue in the complaint.

Contrary to the founding agreement, the defendants chose to use GPT-4 not for the good of humanity, but as a proprietary technology aimed at maximizing the profits of the largest company in the world, [namely Microsoft].

A quote from Excerpt from the lawsuit

Microsoft pledged US$13 billion ($17.6 billion Canadian) in' investments in OpenAI. Sam Altman has since reoriented OpenAI on a lucrative trajectory, which caused him to be fired by part of the board of directors in November. Supported by Microsoft, the boss of OpenAI was reinstated five days later, and a new board of directors was formed.

Under the leadership of its new board of directors, the company is not content not to develop, but actually refine a generative artificial intelligence to maximize Microsoft's profits rather than benefiting humanity, we detail in the lawsuit.

Elon Musk calls in particular for GPT-4 to be excluded from the license granted by OpenAI to Microsoft.
