Jean-Philippe Sajus warns about the saturation of the emergency services in Bagnols-sur-Cèze. Midi Libre – MiKAEL ANISSET

The emergency services in Bagnols-sur-Cèze are saturated and fifteen people were still waiting for placement this Friday, January 3 at the end of the day. A crisis meeting was held to deal with this situation which could further deteriorate in the coming days.

The director of the Bagnols-sur-Cèze Hospital Center Jean-Philippe Sajus is sounding the alarm to relieve pressure on the emergency department. A “mini-crisis unit” met this Friday, January 3, to take stock of the situation. “All hospital beds are full. This has an impact on the emergency department, announces the director. There are no more places available and fifteen people are currently waiting to be placed. For the Bagnols hospital, this is already a lot. The short-stay hospitalization unit (UHCD) was already full.”The emergency department is working on patient transfers. “Direct discharges with returns home are never easy at the beginning of the year because medical practices can be closed.”

Mainly elderly patients

This critical situation is due in particular to an epidemic of influenza but also of Covid. “They are mainly elderly people and given their fragility they require hospitalization but we cannot push the walls, continues Jean-Philippe Sajus. Staffing levels are also limited. We must be extremely vigilant about this. We must take into account both our human resources and the need not to degrade the quality of care to avoid disasters.”

Regulation by the Center 15

The director of the hospital center fears a deterioration in the situation. “The epidemic peak has not yet passed, hence the concern about being able to provide care for people arriving at the emergency room in the coming days. I didn't think I would have to communicate, but the context is very difficult. I would like to remind users that they must go through the 15 Center before coming to the emergency room. The message has been lost sight of a little, but it is essential!
