“You don't have the right to think about who you're going to put in Matignon and to hesitate between several hypotheses ?”, François Bayrou said on the show “L'Événement l'interview” on France 2 this Thursday, December 19, 2024, before indicating that Emmanuel Macron had indeed “hesitated”before appointing him Prime Minister.

François Bayrou answered questions from Caroline Roux, Nathalie Saint-Cricq and Dominique Seux, following the 8 p.m. news. This was his first time speaking on a television set since his appointment.

1 hour 45 minutes of interview

“And after all, why would (Emmanuel Macron) have done otherwise? We had a discussion in which I tried to show him that I thought we had to do things differently, and that's the choice he made at the end of that discussion”, continued the now Prime Minister, quoted by BFM.

On December 13, François Bayrou arrived at the Elysée at 8:30 a.m. Emmanuel Macron lets him know that he didn't choose him as Prime Minister. The meeting will ultimately last 1 hour 45 minutes. A long interview during which the mayor of Pau does not give up on succeeding Michel Barnier, until the result that everyone knows.

A government “before Christmas” ?

After almost two hours of uncertainty, François Bayrou is appointed Prime Minister, “responsible for forming a government” by Emmanuel Macron.

Almost a week later, the Prime Minister said he hoped to form a government “during the weekend”, “in any case before Christmas”.
